About Havana

Havana is a city frozen in time and pulsing with life. Pastel-colored colonial buildings crumble beautifully along the Malecon, the seaside promenade where Habaneros gather at sunset to fish, flirt, and play music. Chrome-bumpered 1950s Chevrolets and Buicks roll past Art Deco theaters and Baroque churches. The soundtrack is inescapable — son, salsa, rumba, and reggaeton pour from open doorways, live bands play in every plaza, and somewhere a trumpet is always rehearsing.

Old Havana (Habana Vieja) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary density: the 18th-century Cathedral, the fortress of La Cabana across the bay, Hemingway's favorite bars — El Floridita for daiquiris and La Bodeguita del Medio for mojitos. The restoration of Plaza Vieja and surrounding blocks has created some of Cuba's finest dining, though the best meals may still be found in paladares — private restaurants in people's homes serving ropa vieja, lechon asado, and yuca con mojo.

Cuba's charms come with quirks. Internet is limited, dual currencies can confuse, and infrastructure creaks. But these frictions are part of what makes Havana feel so different from anywhere else. The warmth of the people, the depth of the music culture, and the visual poetry of a city that looks like a Wes Anderson set designed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez make it unforgettable.
